Deepening our Understanding

Posted 22/3/2019

Deepening our understanding of planning and the timetabled blocking of the foundation subjects in Key Stage 2 is challenging for all subject leaders.  Our last blog provided support for subject leaders to begin planning sequenced units of work in History.

The following link to recent Ofsted curriculum workshops will provide invaluable support for subject leaders to further develop a deeper knowledge of the cumulative way the curriculum should be built.  Our leaders have particularly found the section on developing the curriculum on Romans from 5:20 to 10:20 invaluable in aiding their understanding of the changes required for a more knowledge rich curriculum.

Previously subject leaders focused on checking coverage of topics rather than deepening pupil’s knowledge. As a result, it will be our subject leaders who will have a vital role in ensuring that the knowledge rich approach to foundation subjects is fully embedded across our schools.  This will require a significant change in leaders’ practice and as a consequence, we are providing extra training and support materials to develop their confidence in taking on the challenges of this new role.

Below are some question frameworks that subject leaders are using with their colleagues to help them to improve their existing practice.
